Bitumen Emulsion SS-1h Description
Bitumen Emulsion SS-1h is an anionic slow-setting asphalt emulsion containing a minimum of 57% Bitumen designed for use as a tack coat, in fine-graded mixes, dust control, fog seal, and specialty applications. It is formulated with a harder base (lower penetration) than SS-1h for use in warmer climates.
Applications of Bitumen Emulsion SS-1h
SS-1h is primarily used as a tack coat prior to the placement of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), as well as in fine-graded mixes, dust control, fog seal applications, and other specialized uses.
Difference Between Bitumen Emulsion SS-1 and SS-1h
The primary difference between Bitumen Emulsion SS-1 and SS-1h lies in their
viscosity.
SS-1: This is a slow-setting anionic bitumen emulsion with a lower viscosity.
SS-1h: This is also a slow-setting anionic bitumen emulsion but with a higher viscosity. The ‘h’ in SS-1h stands for ‘high’.
The viscosity difference impacts the application and performance of the emulsions:
SS-1: Due to its lower viscosity, it’s easier to apply and penetrates better into porous surfaces. It’s often used for tack coats and prime coats.
SS-1h: The higher viscosity makes it more suitable for applications where a thicker film is required, such as micro surfacing or as a binder for aggregates.
