Description of Cutback bitumen RC-70

Cutback bitumen is an asphalt has a solvent or distillate added into it to make it liquid at ambient temperatures and at the same time improve its ability to coat aggregates. The solvent or distillate usually used for this purpose are gasoline, diesel, kerosene and naphtha. Typical amount of solvent or distillate in a cutback bitumen is from 12% to 40%.

Meaning of Cutback Bitumen RC-70

The reduction in viscosity of the bitumen aids the construction of seal coats in road pavements as the softened mixture wets the chips more easily. The cutback agent evaporates from the seal coat, the cutback agent becoming a negligible component of the seal coat a few months after application. If significant amounts of the cutback agent remain in the seal coat an unwanted long-term softening effect may result.

• RC: The “RC” in RC 70 stands for “Rapid Curing.” This indicates the curing properties of the cutback bitumen. Rapid-curing bitumens have a fast rate of solvent evaporation and curing, which means they solidify relatively quickly after application.
• 70: The number “70” represents the viscosity of the cutback bitumen. In this case, RC 70 has a relatively low viscosity, indicating that it is less viscous and flows more easily compared to cutback bitumens with higher viscosity numbers.

This type of bitumen is appropriate for use in pavement construction and treatment, according to ASTM D2028-97, which was reapproved in 2004. Cutback Grade Bitumen is commonly used for spraying and some mixing applications. Current popular applications include penetrating prime coatings and making repair or stockpiling mixtures. Cutback asphalt mixed with aggregate frequently contains an adhesive agent to help coat the aggregate surface.

Cutback chemicals are used to reduce the viscosity of bitumen when employed as a primer on the surface of a road pavement aggregate base course or substrate. Kerosene is utilized as a bitumen cutback agent in varying amounts based on local conditions and requirements.
